Description
The Katpana Desert is a cold desert in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan. It is also known as the Cold Desert of Skardu. This desert sits at a high altitude. You will see large sand dunes here, even though it gets very cold in winter. It is a special place where sand can meet snow during certain times of the year, making it look very different from other deserts.

Autumn: (September - November) The weather gets cooler and very pleasant. Trees in the Skardu valley turn golden, making the drive to the desert very pretty. Good time for taking photos.
Winter: (December - March) It gets very cold and there is heavy snowfall. The sand dunes often get covered in a layer of snow, creating a very unique and beautiful view. Be ready for freezing temperatures.
How to Reach
- By Air: The nearest active airport is Skardu Airport (KDU). Katpana Desert is very close to Skardu city center, usually a short drive from the airport.
- By Road: Travel to Skardu city via the Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Islamabad or Gilgit. From Skardu city, Katpana Desert is easily reached by local roads, often within a 15-20 minute drive.
- By Train: Pakistan's railway network does not reach Skardu. The nearest major active railway station is Rawalpindi Railway Station (RWP). From there, you would need to travel by road for many hours to reach Skardu.
- By Public Transport: From Skardu city center, you can hire local jeeps, taxis, or private cars to reach Katpana Desert. It's a well-known spot, so local drivers know the way.
