Faisalabad: The Industrial Heart of Punjab
Faisalabad stands as a pivotal urban center in Pakistan's Punjab province, recognized for its robust industrial output and significant contribution to the national economy. As a planned city with a distinctive colonial heritage, it offers a unique perspective on Pakistan's development and commercial dynamism.
Historical Foundation
Originally known as Lyallpur, the city was established in 1888 by the British Indian government, named in honor of Sir James Lyall, the Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab. Its urban layout was meticulously planned around a central clock tower, with eight radiating bazaars designed to facilitate commerce and efficient administration. This innovative radial design, reminiscent of the Union Jack, quickly positioned Lyallpur as a prominent agricultural market. Post-independence, the city continued its trajectory of growth, evolving into a major industrial hub. In 1977, it was officially renamed Faisalabad, paying tribute to King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia.
